Redfern’s Hemp Compliance: Best Practices & Quality Control

At Redfern Hemp Co., we believe that quality control is the heart of our commitment to you, our valued customer. We’re not just making Virginia Compliant Edibles; we’re crafting products with exceptional care, ensuring every single item you receive is of the highest quality and perfectly compliant with Virginia’s rigorous standards. Our dedication spans every step, from the moment our ingredients are sourced to the point our products reach your hands.

Wise Sourcing with High-Quality Ingredients

We are deeply committed to sourcing high-quality, Virginia-grown industrial hemp. It’s lawful for growers, handlers, and processors like us to cultivate and process industrial hemp in the Commonwealth for any lawful purpose. We adhere strictly to the Virginia Department of Agriculture Consumers Services’ standards for industrial hemp extracts intended for human consumption, ensuring our edible hemp products meet the stringent requirements.

We also pay close attention to the details of cultivation. Any pesticide application on industrial hemp or during its processing must comply with the pesticide label and the Virginia Pesticide Control Act, with records meticulously maintained for at least three years. This ensures that the foundational elements of our edibles are pure and safe.

Attention to Detail When Making Each Batch

When it comes to crafting each batch of Redfern Hemp Co. edibles, our attention to detail is second to none. Our manufacturing facilities where our delicious edibles are made meet all sanitary standards prescribed by the Virginia Department of Health. We religiously follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). As manufacturers of industrial hemp extracts for human consumption in Virginia, we comply with food laws and regulations, including 21 CFR Part 117, “Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food”.

Rigorous contaminant testing is a cornerstone of our process. Our products undergo comprehensive testing for microbiological contaminants, mycotoxins, heavy metals, residual solvents, and pesticides, just as medical cannabis products are required to in Virginia. We ensure our industrial hemp extracts used in food meet the contaminant levels established for the medical cannabis program.

Ensuring all Labeling is Compliant and Products are on the Voluntary List

Clear, accurate, and compliant labeling is non-negotiable for us. We ensure our labels for all products, including our Redfern Mini Chocolates and Redfern Mini Gummy Melts, are complete, accurate and uniform. They explicitly include the product name, all active and inactive ingredients (including cannabinoids, terpenes, additives, preservatives, flavorings, sweeteners, and carrier oils), and the total percentage and milligrams of THC and CBD in the product, as well as the milligrams per serving. For our industrial hemp extracts, labels clearly state the total percentage and milligrams of all tetrahydrocannabinols and total milligrams per serving. We also make sure our topical hemp products include a label stating they are not intended for human consumption.

Our packaging is designed with safety in mind. Products containing THC are sold in opaque, child-resistant, tamper-evident, and resealable packaging. We ensure our packaging and labels do not depict or are in the shape of a human, animal, vehicle, or fruit, and do not mimic other manufacturers’ trademarks. We are incredibly proud that Redfern Hemp Co. products, such as our Redfern CBD Chocolate and Redfern CBD Gummy Melts, are featured on the VDACS Office of Hemp Enforcement’s voluntary list of compliant edible hemp products. This list highlights manufacturers and distributors who have been reviewed for compliance with the July 2023 laws for edible hemp products, demonstrating our proactive commitment to transparency and adherence to regulations.

Ensuring Each Retailer Has the Necessary Paperwork to Pass a Virginia Hemp Enforcement Inspection

We understand that our responsibility extends to our retail partners. We work diligently to ensure that each retailer carrying Redfern Hemp Co. products has the necessary paperwork to pass a Virginia Hemp Enforcement Inspection. This includes ensuring they have obtained a regulated hemp product retail facility registration from VDACS, which became a requirement on November 15, 2024, for anyone offering regulated hemp products or substances containing industrial hemp-derived cannabinoids for human consumption at retail. We also guide our retailers in securing a food establishment permit from the VDACS Food Safety Program or certifying their exemption from such a permit, which is essential for those offering edible hemp products.

Love and Compliance in every batch - that's the Redfern Promise

Furthermore, we ensure our retailers have completed and submitted the Edible Hemp Products Disclosure Form to the VDACS Office of Hemp Enforcement, a legal requirement for selling edible hemp products. A critical element we support is the availability of Certificate of Analysis (COA) for each product at the retail location. This COA must be produced by an independent laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standard, clearly stating the total THC concentration of the substance. The COA must also include a matching identifier (like a batch or lot number) that appears on the product, and the testing laboratory’s accreditation documentation must be available for review at the point of sale.

We recognize that VDACS inspectors have the authority to access and inspect any retail location during business hours to ensure compliance. Refusing entry can lead to significant civil penalties or even a Class 1 misdemeanor charge. We strive to empower our retailers with all the necessary documentation and understanding to confidently navigate these inspections, ensuring a smooth and compliant operation for everyone involved.

Hemp Compliance Is Our Promise

At Redfern Hemp Co., our mission is truly simple: to deliver the highest quality Virginia product by embracing the most rigorous quality control standards imaginable, at every single turn. This commitment is upheld by ensuring industrial hemp products adhere to a strict no more than two milligrams of total THC per package, unless they have a favorable CBD to THC ratio of at least 25:1. Your trust and safety are, and always will be, our guiding stars, reflected in clear and compliant labeling, and supporting our retail partners in obtaining necessary registrations and permits from VDACS, as they are subject to inspections for compliance.

GRAHAM REDFERN

Owner & Hemp Farmer

Before I became an American hemp farmer and entrepreneur, I first heard of the hemp industry during a period when my construction business thrived, but the housing crash of 2009 changed everything. While visiting Asheville, North Carolina, I encountered a groundbreaking green building – a house made 90% from hemp, from the flooring to the walls, excluding only electrical components and appliances.

Intrigued, I consulted with Andrea Herman, president of the Hemp Industries of America, spending an hour and $150 to understand the challenges of building such houses in the U.S.. When Andrea explained the steep costs preventing widespread use of U.S.-grown hemp, it ignited a passion in me. I questioned, “Why not?” This moment became a catalyst for my deep dive into the hemp industry.

Passage of the Farm Bills

In 2014, the passing of the Farm Bill allowed universities to grow hemp, prompting me to shift from the car industry. Initially unsure of my path, I invested in penny hemp stocks and connected with the Virginia Industrial Hemp Coalition, working with universities such as JMU, UVA, VSU, and Virginia Tech to explore potential markets.

For four years, restricted by regulations to work with universities, I delved into the banking industry. When the 2019 Farm Bill dismantled barriers, allowing American farmers to cultivate cannabis plants with less than 0.3% THC, my dream took a leap. Redfern Hemp Co. was born, marking the legal sale of hemp products in Virginia for the first time in over seventy years. With my girlfriend Courtney, we hustled – attending state fairs, cultivating hemp on our 42-acre Caroline County farm, and navigating the burgeoning industry. Fast-forward to 2023, and despite being one of the few companies remaining, we face challenges.

Unfortunately, Virginia lawmakers have strained our efforts, declaring federally legal cannabinoid-derived hemp products illegal unless sold by a select few medical marijuana operators.

In the face of Virginia’s attempt to monopolize medical marijuana, we persist in expanding cannabis job opportunities for all Virginians.

We champion Virginians’ rights to affordable, high-quality products, battling against restrictive legislation. It’s disheartening to see the government hindering the benefits of this plant, including job creation and increased taxation.

Restoring Virginia’s Hemp Farming Legacy

There was a time when Virginian hemp farmers paid taxes with hemp. Reintroducing low-dosage, safe cannabinoid products in smoke shops, convenience stores, and local markets could restore this tradition on a broader scale than a handful of licensees. We’re committed to reclaiming this birthright, enabling Virginians to pay their taxes with hemp once again.
